World Design Capital (WDC) is a biennial global event that celebrates design as a tool for improving social, cultural and economic life. WDC 2014 was hosted in Cape Town, which saw a yearlong series of design-related events.
As one of the main sponsors of WDC, Microsoft wanted to be an active sponsor, and participating in a meaningful way. By working directly with a project in le Langa township, Microsoft helped digitally empower the local community and showed how technology is a contributing factor in positively changing peoples’ lives.
Utilizing the free Wi-Fi infrastructure already in place, Microsoft Mobile Library was providing a range of mobile devices enabling the residents to access the Internet and Microsoft services, and through a series of training sessions with a ‘Train the trainer format’ the aim was to leave a lasting improvement to be built on, past the 2014 sponsorship.
